The invention of modern air conditioning.
Willis Carrier born in November 26, 1876 in Angola New York and is responsible for inventing the concepts of modern air conditioning. Willis earned his engineering degree from the Cornell University in 1901 and started working at the Buffalo forge company in 1901.
It was on a foggy Pittsburgh train platform in 1902 when Willis came up with the idea that he could dry air by passing water through it to create Fog. In doing so he realised that it had the fundamental building block to control air temperature and the humidity of the air. Although as a child Willis struggled with concepts of fractions and basic mathematics, realising that he had a learning disability in these specific areas his mother taught him about the valuable lessons of fractions in mathematics by cutting apples into pieces and teaching him how these pieces added up to one whole piece.
What Is An Air Conditioner
An air-conditioner in its common use is a device that lowers the temperature. This method of cooling is achieved through a refrigeration cycle but sometimes it can also be achieved through evaporation or free cooling. Using basic common sense the word air conditioning simply means a form of technology that controls the condition of the air for example heating, cooling, ventilation, dehumidification or just plain air movement.
Development of Mechanical Cooling
One of the earliest developments of mechanical cooling was actually created in the second century by Chinese inventor Ding Huan (fl 180) of the Han Dynasty. Into one described his device is having waterpowered fan wheels for air conditioning as well as rising jet streams of water from fountains, which in turn circulated the air and added a cool moist environment to often hot and balmy temperatures.
Some of the other early mechanical or chemical means of controlling the climate or cooling down the air was practised by Benjamin Franklin and gentlemen called John Hadley. The pair had confirmed that by the evaporation of highly volatile liquids such as ether or alcohol had a cooling effect on the surface of any object that these highly volatile or the woods were applied to.
Another means of mechanical ventilation or cooling is by just using a typical fan that is powered by an electrical motor which forces Propeller type blades to circulate the air around the environment and as a byproduct cooling the ambient temperature by creating circulation through the area.
In many modern homes, circulation and ventilation has been built in and designed into the architectural design of the actual building. Airflow is controlled through a series of events created by a wind or the mere fact that hot air rises to create an airflow or a ventilation current throughout the living space.

How Does an Air Conditioner Work?
All refrigerators and air-conditioners work basically the same way. As an alternative to cooling the air inside a small space such as a refrigerator and air-conditioner works by cooling the entire room house or business.
The chemicals that air-conditioners use are basically gases that are easily converted to a liquid and back again. These chemicals are used to transfer heat from the air inside the home and transfer it to the outside environment or air.
The device has three main components that are used to achieve this purpose the first component is a compressor the second a condenser and then of course an evaporator. The condenser and compressor are normally situated outside of the space which needs to be cooled or heated. The evaporator is located inside the home and will be located inside the air conditioning unit itself.
As the fluid leaves a condenser is temperature is much cooler thus transforming the chemical from a gas to liquid under high pressure. The liquid then goes into the evaporator through a very narrow tube and the liquids pressure drops. As the liquids pressure drops it begins to evaporate into a gas.
Evaporation takes place as the liquid changes into a gas then extracts heat from the air and expels it to the outside of the building, home or office.
Metal fins on the evaporator also help it to exchange the thermal energy to the surrounding air. This cycle of compressing the chemical is repeated over and over again until the required temperature is reached. Once the required temperature is reached the thermostat will indicate to the unit to go into standby mode until the temperature rises again and the process will repeat itself.
When you reverse the process of removing the hot air from the room and flip it so to speak, so that the hot air then returns to the room you now have a heat pump. Air-conditioners not only cool down the immediate environment but they can also act as a heater. This is achieved by a valve which can switch two ways when it reverses the flow of liquid inside the heat pump it will act like a heater.
To put it simply an air conditioning unit will blow air over a series of coils from which ever environment needs to have the climate controlled and either heat or cool the air inside the immediate space. In the case of heating the warm air is simply returned to the room after it passes through a series of electric strip heaters to heat the cold air that the air conditioning unit usually pumps outside.
